We all know the formula by now: main character is out of commission for (insert reason here) and shows up at the last minute when all hope is lost to stop the bad guys who never would have had a chance if main character were there from the beginning. It was hilarious to see the power gap between Kiryu vs everyone else and very satisfying to play him as an unstoppable force of nature.Īsking whether Kiryu was needed in Yakuza 4 is like asking whether we really needed Goku, Naruto, or One Punch Man in their respective series. The entire plot of Yakuza 4 hinges on the fact that, "If Kiryu were here, none of this would have happened." Kiryu basically comes out of nowhere as a living legend who is feared by all in Part 4 and just steam rolls through EVERYBODY: he beats up Akiyama/Tanimura, fights Saejima to a draw, defeats the entire Ueno Seiwa Clan singlehandedly, and saves the day like One Punch Man in a single afternoon. Kiryu's involvement in Yakuza 4 is minimal but I loved every second of it. Did it enhance the experience? ABSOLUTELY YES! Did his involvement detract from the experience? No. Was he needed to tell the story of Yakuza 4? Absolutely not. (Spoilers do not need to be tagged on /r/yakooza, so browse with caution.)
